I’ve wanted to start a blog for a while. Every social site seems to have a field called ‘your blog’ and nearly everyone I know online has one. I also wanted an online presence that did not entail posting my business site complete with last name, phone number and location. One day I mentioned this and pb30 – who had a lot of server space – offered to host it. I grabbed this domain name.
Then the aggravation started. The hosting site has an interface I initially found to be annoying. One of those ‘make it simple for people who have never uploaded a site before’ layouts with cute little icons. I’ve used Dreamweaver for all my sites.
For those who groaned or snickered when they read the word Dreamweaver: I’ve used it for years through four versions. I am not a programmer. My sites are a half dozen or so pages. I start by creating and saving a Dreamweaver template then create the other pages from it. This way I can easily update the site. All design is CSS. Yes I go in to shorten and clean up the code. And I’ve never had a problem with the ftp. </defense>
It took the rest of the day to get the account stuff sorted then get WordPress going. The next day I decided to upload a theme. I quickly found one in the color family I wanted, then ran into an annoying difficulty with the ftp program which I eventually figured out. Enough for that day.
The next time I wanted to work on it I added Twitter Tools. The instant I viewed the site with the Twitter feed working I noticed something unfortunate about the theme: the text was almost invisible! Why did I want to do a blog again??? Time to search for another theme. After a few hours I finally found one I didn’t hate, uploaded it and left it until my headache went away.
This took eight days on and off, but I learned a lot and now I have a blog.
Welcome to blogging! I have a love/hate relationship with personal one and especially with my other foodie blog.
Most of all, have fun with it! Good luck
Gknee… Welcome to the world of blogging, it is fun, cathartic, and a MAJOR pain in the ass.
You’ll love it. Look forward to reading more.
I’ve had this up for a week and didn’t have the nerve to post the link anywhere
Thanks so much for the comments bigepaz and Stephen!
Nicely written! Blogs have such a yin/yang relationship w/ the blogger. You are a great communicator, so, you’ll do a wonderful job of blogging. Since we are not that technically inclined, we use ours for rants, observations, and mostly, to let our friends know what we are up to.
I’m glad you decided to start one!
I love the theme you chose. So cute.
I’m adding your feed to my Google Reader.
