After eye surgery in December 2007, I had to lie down flat for five days. I would be unable to use the computer, read or watch tv, so I went looking for a fun podcast to load on my iPod. There was a CNET podcast called Gadgettes, with Molly Wood and Kelly Morrison. I’d never really listened to it, but it seemed like fun, so I downloaded all of the episodes. I started with the first episode and continued on.
When Jason Howell appeared, the show jelled. They had chemistry. It was good. It was fun. It was hilarious. It became my favorite podcast. When Kelly was out on maternity leave for a few months during 2008, Lindsey Turrentine filled in and she was great too.
The show is ostensibly about gadgets, but has come to encompass just about every crazy thing on the web. Anything is possible during Gadgettes: singing, impressions, chicken noises, “snark, and vicious attacks on small, cute, helpless little pink gadgets” (from the podcast description). They have developed nutty segments such as: Pink Watch, Why Didn’t I Think Of That, What The Hell? and Kill Me. Each has a brilliantly hilarious theme song.
But it’s the hosts, rather than the content, that make the show what it is. They are outrageous, naughty, silly and often screamingly funny. Laughing to the point of tears is always a danger. I always warn people not to eat, drink or operate heavy machinery while listening. If you want to join in the fun come to CNET Live irc.geekshed.net #CNETFans on thursdays at around 2:30 pacific 5:30 eastern.
Aaah yeah Gadgettes, I remember when that was a Family Show! I’m so old now.
have to go, Alarm is calling
I whole-heartedly agree.
I stopped listening to it when Molly went out on maternity leave. One day I happen to have the watchbol page open on my browser, and watched it again, and have been watching again ever since. Jason is a welcome addition, and I don’t know if he made the difference, but it sure is a lot funnier than I remember.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been listen to Gadgettes since December. I started with the first “Gadget Girls” and am up to Episode 60 now. Jason’s arrival made a HUGE difference. And all three ladies (Molly, Lindsey, and Kelly) are very funny.
I didn’t heed your warning though. I’ve been listening in the car on the way to work and at the gym working out. Today, I nearly injured myself on one of the exercise machines.
I try not to listen when driving any more. I’ve had several incidents where I nearly got into an accident because of Gadgettes.
For a time, I had the Knight Rider/A-Team theme blendle as my ringtone. Jason really is the man when it comes to audio extras.

Yeah. It blows. Bigtime. I can safely say that one of my absolute favorite parts of working at CNET is going away. I knew it would suck when it happened, but it sucks just a tad more than I expected to be honest. Gknee, you’ve always been a huge supporter of the show and I simply can’t thank you enough for that. I’m stoked you were able to sit in on an episode to get an in-studio view of the craziness.
Uck. I feel icky. I need a vibrator tech-story. Stat.
Jason, we all owe you, and Molly, and Kelly, and anyone else involved with Gadgettes a huge “thank you” for all of the hours of entertainment you gave us. I think it’s easy for us fans to forget that the shows are just part of your jobs, and that there’s only so many hours in the day.
So again, thank you, for all your work. I can’t say that enough. To all of you.
